In an inspired tale of life imitating art, readers first met the word Shangri-La from the pages of James Hilton’s 1930s novel Lost Horizon. Hilton’s best-selling adventure novel depicts the story of a military man who stumbles on the world’s greatest hope for peace deep in Tibet: Shangri-La.
Although fiction in 1933, it became fact in 1971 when the first Shangri-La hotel opened in Singapore. This marked the beginning of a new standard for hotel excellence. By redefining what it means to be a true host, Shangri-La quickly developed a reputation for being a brand that puts ‘care from the heart’ at the core of its hospitality experience. Today, that experience extends to over 90 hotels and resorts across Asia Pacific, North America, Middle East and Europe. With locations in France, Turkey and the United Kingdom, the hotel chain has become a leader in bringing excellence to the Western world.

In the evening, the Bar Botaniste (our favorite) is the ideal place to relax around a variety of sophisticated cocktails and spirits. Honoring the favorite pastime of the palace’s original resident, Prince Roland Bonaparte, Le Bar Botaniste celebrates botany with rare botanical spirits. This nature-inspired bar features plants under cloches in each corner and authentic absinthe fountains. The bar offers an extensive menu of exclusive cocktail creations inspired by Roland's expeditions around Europe and Asia as well as a selection of gourmet tapas.
Chi, The Spa, is a sanctuary set in the former stables of Prince Roland Bonaparte's private residence and designed around a vast swimming pool bathed in natural light. Here you'll discover a holistic and personal approach to well-being through a range of professional treatments, focused on rebalancing the body and the mind. Chi, The Spa proudly uses a range of 100% clean and organic products formulated by Alaena, a pioneer in French cosmetics and certified by the Ecocert Cosmos standard.
For those looking to stay active, their state-of-the-art Health Club overlooks the swimming pool and offers a wide range of equipment alongside free weights and an area for mat exercises.

The herbarium is memorialized at the celebrated Bar Botaniste in the Shangri-La Hotel, a one-of-a-kind venue that serves a one-of-a-kind single malt scotch whisky: The Dalmore King Alexander III. Its groundbreaking six-cask finish (matured in casks that once contained wine, Madeira, sherry, Marsala, bourbon and port) represents the peak of master distiller Richard Paterson’s art; he has produced a complex, rewarding whisky that acknowledges its heritage while belonging firmly in the 21st century.
“This whisky has a real Highland personality. Enjoy it as it is. Treat it with respect and let the whisky breathe. When you ‘nose’ [smell] the whisky, you should say hello to it. The first nose is like meeting someone for the first time,” says Emery.
In old France, this was where elegantly wealthy gentlefolk chose to make their homes, and to this day the atmosphere here somehow seems less hurried, quieter, more discreet. The mixology classes and experiences offered at Shangri-La Paris are so unique, we really recommend it if you want to take your stay to the next level.
