🏠 PLACE: SHOU SUGI BAN HOUSE
The most luxurious and immersive Hamptons wellness retreat and spa.
Neighboring Southampton’s shoreline and adjacent to the Parrish Art Museum, you first drive through the property’s entry gate off of Route 27 and you are instantly mesmerized by the space’s aesthetics. Greeted by a large Buddha statue (sourced from Bali), you walk towards the large, white-washed main house on a pebbled path outlined by reflective pools and waterfalls, and catch glimpses of the Japanese gardens with over 200 evergreen trees surrounding the Main Barn and Healing Art Barn. You stand in awe as you discover a spa with hydrotherapy pools, a roof deck, an open-air Movement Pavilion, a ceremonial fire circle, fitness center, organic vegetable and herb gardens (from which the dining menus are sourced), and a curated library of wellness books. You stop and ask yourself did you step into a wellness heaven?
Shou Sugi Ban House, a luxury wellness spa and retreat, opened in May 2019 across three acres of land in the serene area of the Hamptons known as Water Mill, just under two hours from midtown Manhattan. Since opening, it has been popular with the Hamptons elite because of its high-end wellness amenities, white-glove service, customized wellness programming, and unique immersive experiences for each of its 13 rooms and its guests. SSBH is also famously known for culinary programming designed by two Michelin starred chef Mads Refslund, co-founder of Noma, the world-class restaurant in Denmark. SSBH just took two years to be named “the best destination spa in the U.S.” and is one of the most coveted wellness retreat in the country. The Japanese-inspired wellness retreat also opened a second hotel called the Shou Sugi Ban Inn, which includes two over-the-top luxury private residences.
SSBH redefines what is means to actively seek wellness and transform/heal yourself through curated hospitality experiences that are also elevated and unique. Amy Cherry-Abitbol, the visionary founder and creative force behind SSBH, wanted to create an innovative experience for guests that blended “global wellness philosophies with state-of-the-art practices – and programs that merge with wellness, culture and science.” As a former M&A attorney, Amy and her business partner, Kathleen Kapnick purchased the land in 2015 and hired an all star female team of famous architects and designers to work on the project. SSBH was born from a vision to create a wellness sanctuary outside of the hectic daily grind, grounded in a belief that everyone walks on a unique path to wellness and wholeness, and that openness and exploration are linked to one’s wellness. SSBH offers a spa, healing arts, retreats, nutrition, fitness and complete wellness experiences in a holistic, educational, and vibrant setting.
SSBH also includes multi-day retreats and half or full day spa access for guests. Schedules are flexible but could include tea ceremonies, barre or HIT classes, massage of facials, delectable plant based meals, and luxury amenities in the rooms that include hand-carved soaps from Southampton Soap Company, organic skincare by Kotoshina, bathroom accessories by Tina Frey and access to deep soaking Japanese tubs (Hinoki ofuro). Overall programming at SSBH integrates holistic living and ancient modalities with a modern twist, and guided by visiting practitioners.
“SSBH excels in providing an easy place for urban dwellers to escape to after hitting pause on the stresses of life, where they can slow down and take care of themselves for the weekend. It is during these introspective moments that guests can focus on whatever brought them to SSBH in the first place—and hone the skills and techniques needed to bring a piece of their newfound zen home,” said Indagare
SSBH’s additional luxury spa offerings include Ashiatsu massage rooms, Watsu and plunge pools, a chromotherapy shower, a solarium deck, an indoor/outdoor relaxation lounge, Watsu Water Massage, Biologique Recherche facials, Aromatherapy, Deep Tissue Massage, Cupping with In Fiore, and more. It is truly a unique holistic health experience. After trying the spa treatments, you can also partake in a post-dinner sound bath ritual, meditative guided beach walk, holotropic breathwork class, or grounding tea ceremony…all of which makes SSBH stand out from other spas and retreats.
