Redefining traditional elegance on Shelter Island.

The Pridwin has been owned and operated since 1961 by the Petry family. The property preserves their legacy of tradition, while exuding the charm of old-money New York. Located on the laid-back Shelter Island between the North and South Forks of Long Island, The Pridwin has attracted a more sophisticated crowd without much of the fussy Hamptons stereotype. The Pridwin has remained a mainstay on the 29-square-mile island for much of its existence. With 33 rooms and 16 cottages, it is the largest hotel and more quiet than that of Sunset Beach also on the Island. The secret of this property is Cresecent Beach which overlooks Peconic Bay, elevated with beautiful views of the cove.
The design is exquisite with figures like old ship models, wicker furniture, and playful wallpaper that resemble Palm Beach meets Cape Cod vibes. Botanical textiles, nautical accents, wooden windows, and modern bathrooms (think heated floors) fill the rooms and the colors exude a whimsical green, taffeta pink and white. When you go outside, families are outside playing bocce or in their decorated and cozy rooms gathering around the fireplace playing cards and making new memories. Across the 7.5-acre property, the hotel maintains its classic Long Island charm with its farm-to-table food program, which you can enjoy on a large deck with water views.
The hotel has four floors with a restored upper lobby with original wainscotting, hardwood floors, and a cascade of chandeliers from the 1927 dining room. “I salvaged as much as I could from the original building,” says Colleen, crediting the Petrys for storing away these treasures. “There’s ’30s, ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s—it’s an amazing compilation.” -Vogue
Guests must attend The Pridwin Spa, “which offers a full menu of sea-inspired spa and bodywork treatments, including its signature bespoke facial using seaweed-based products from Osea.” Natural light fills each of the three treatments rooms with beautiful views of the bay. There is also a hammam located at the property. After a facial or treatment, guests can take boats docked at the hotel’s pier for an impromptu fishing trips across the water to the North Fork or Greenpoint .

With over 20 years of experience in hospitality design Colleen has the innate ability to bring happiness and a fresh perspective into both hotels and homes.” Designing the Pridwin, she preserved the classic design of the property, and mixed in slight modern elements to bridge the gap between the old and new. With the coastal elements mixed in with classic cool, this design is a cousin of Nantucket or the Cape nestled in the Hamptons.
